The Wisdom of Mr. Henry Ford

The early days of the automobile

360 Degree Product Photography reminds me of the early days of the automobile. There were many designers and builders of this new transportation method. There were very few standards and even fewer commercial successes. Some companies focused on art, others focused on performance. It was the company that brought everything together and provided what the people needed at a price that they could afford that ensured the success of the automobile.

A new paradigm

By owning an this strange new invention, a worker could travel further to a better job. They could travel distances that ordinarily would have been unachievable with a carriage, horse or by foot. My idol, Mr. Henry Ford recognized in order to get people to accept this new paradigm, an automobile had to be both reliable and affordable and most importantly, it had to be delivered at a price that was attainable. Although his success was not overnight and failures were many, he eventually succeeded in both proving the paradigm and building a successful company.

How did Mr. Ford do it?

Mr. Ford recognized the importance of standards. Art had its place in society and underneath the sheet metal of an automobile (although engineers may disagree) was simply no place for interpretation He focused on standardized processes and components that produced tangible, real world performance. This in turn allowed for lower prices and the abandonment of the inefficient horse and buggy.

Relation to 360 Degree Product Photography
360 Degree Product Photography resembles the early automotive industry. Very few standards, wildly varying prices and an almost perverted obsession with the art all result in a poor market share for a very effective means of increasing web site conversion. In 2010, less than 1% of e-commerce websites feature 360 degree product photography. Considering all the variables- it is not surprising that the majority of companies have not leveraged this technology.
